Thurl Bailey Headlines WSU’s Crystal Crest Awards Ceremony

OGDEN, Utah — The 33rd annual Crystal Crest Awards will honor outstanding Weber State University students, faculty and staff in Academy Awards style on April 25 at 7 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballrooms. The event is free and open to the public.

"Crystal Crest is significant because it brings together all areas of excellence across campus," said Tara Peris-Caputo, Crystal Crest co-chair. "The awards are all-encompassing and showcase the shining stars of Weber State."

Thurl Bailey, former Utah Jazz center and current Jazz analyst, singer-songwriter and motivational speaker, will serve as master of ceremonies. Bailey also will entertain the crowd with some of his award-winning, inspirational R&B music.

“Our students are excited to have Thurl Bailey as our emcee this year,” Peris-Caputo said. “They recently saw him perform at a leadership conference they attended in Southern Utah, and since then, they have been anxious to get him to Weber State University. Mr. Bailey is funny, entertaining and extremely charismatic.”

In addition to Bailey’s speech and performance, the WSU Jazz Band will perform under the direction of Shannon Roberts.

Crystal Crest was established in 1982 as WSU’s crowning awards event of the year. It was designed to include the community and showcase the best the university has to offer in 12 areas, including academics, athletics, teaching, service and personality.

The evening is a formal affair with entertainers from both on and off campus. Each of the five finalists in all categories is recognized, and then campus and community leaders announce the winners. The names are closely guarded until the moment of recognition.
