Event Celebrates Federal Education Programs

Weber State University will host college students and staff from across Utah at a TRIO Day Celebration, Feb. 28 in the Shepherd Union Building.

The federal TRIO programs, which date back to the 1960s, are designed to identify and provide resources to high school and college students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The WSU event is intended for college students and staff who are involved with the federal TRIO programs at colleges and universities around the state.

At WSU, the TRIO programs assist first-generation and low-income students, as well as students with disabilities or who are veterans. In 2008-09, 45 percent of WSU’s enrollment was first-generation, and 30 percent came from low-income backgrounds.

The celebration will include workshops on how to become more civically engaged and a luncheon where students will share their experiences. TRIO scholarships also will be awarded.
