WSU Hosts Charter Academy Lottery and Art Show

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University Charter Academy will host its second annual admissions lottery March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballroom.

This event is the culmination of the academy’s open-enrollment period held from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28. Parents wishing for a chance to enroll a child must submit an online lottery application. The winning numbers will be drawn randomly that evening.

The lottery event will include a children’s art festival, featuring artwork created by students of the academy and the Melba S. Lehner Children’s School. The festival begins at 6:30 p.m. Both the festival and lottery are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

WSU was Utah’s first university to receive authorization for a charter academy. The first two kindergarten classes began in August 2013.

“Our school focuses on educating the whole child using developmentally appropriate and research-supported instructional methods,” said Camie Bearden, academy principal.

Academy teachers use various strategies to ensure children receive a well-rounded education in conjunction with the state core curriculum. For instance, in April 2014, the academy will showcase an opera written, designed and performed by its kindergartners in an effort to increase their appreciation for fine arts and improve their fluency, vocabulary and language development.

A group of educators from the Jerry & Vickie Moyes College of Education created the academy. They had a vision of faculty, students and families cooperating to develop a child’s academic, social, emotional and physical capabilities. In addition to providing an excellent kindergarten education, the academy also provides a learning center. WSU teacher education students observe and practice cutting-edge, research-based educational techniques. Faculty and students can also conduct a wide variety of educational research.

WSU Charter Academy consists of two half-day sessions with 22 students in each. It is housed in a state-of-the-art classroom in the David O. McKay Education Building.
