Dining for Dollars Provides Financial Support for Vulnerable WSU Students

OGDEN, Utah – Sonora Grill in downtown Ogden will host its unique and tasty fundraiser, Dining for Dollars, Feb. 6 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. to benefit Weber State University’s Oportunidad Scholarship Fund.

All sales from the day will be donated to help support first-generation or low-income students. The money also helps undocumented students, who are ineligible for financial assistance such as FAFSA, grants or loans.

“This event is something that we look forward to every year as it brings out the best in our community,” said Enrique Romo, WSU’s Access & Diversity executive director. “The event is special because it helps some of our most vulnerable students pursue their higher education aspirations by providing scholarships to remove some of the barriers that stand in the way of achieving their academic potential.”

An anonymous donor will match funds from Sonora Grill up to $25,000. In the previous five years of the event, the restaurant and donor have contributed more than $120,000 to the scholarship fund.

“There are no words to describe my gratitude for the generosity of the donors,” said one student who benefits from the Oportunidad Scholarship. “It is inspiring, and I hope those of us who have received support will be able to similarly give back in the future.”

A special scholarship menu will be offered for $12 and includes a choice of entrée, chips and salsa. Regular menu items will also be available. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 801-393-1999 or at thesonoragrill.com.

Sonora Grill is located at 2310 S. Kiesel Ave., Ogden.
