WSU VPN Access for Windows 7

The following steps will outline the process of using VPN client software to connect to Weber State University's private network from a remote location such as home. The steps will be ordered as follows:

1st: How to locate and identify the IP address of your computer at WSU. The IP Address will be used later for establishing a Remote Desktop connection. How to enable Remote Desktop access on your WSU computer. (To be done on your computer at WSU)

2nd: How to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client software. (To be done on your computer at home or another remote location)

3rd: How to use Windows Remote Desktop software to connect to your computer at WSU. (To be done on your computer at home or another remote location)

4th: How to disconnect your Remote Desktop session and your VPN connection. Also where to locate the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client software to connect in the future.

Finding the IP Address of your WSU computer

(To be done on your computer at WSU)

1. Click on the Start menu and then type cmd in the Search box.

 

2. This opens the Command Prompt window. Type ipconfig and then press Enter on your keyboard.

3. In the results that appear you will see a listing for an IP Address. Make note of this to use later.

4. To enable Remote Desktop access on your WSU computer, click the Start menu then right click on Computer. From this menu click Properties.

 

6. In the System Properties window that appears, click Remote Settings.

 

7. In the lower half of the window click the circle next to the option titled Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop.

 

How to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

(To be done on your computer at home or another remote location. An internet connection is necessary.)

1. Click Start and them click the icon for Internet Explorer. (This tutorial will use Internet Explorer, but you can use your preferred browser.)

 

2. In the Address bar type vpn.weber.edu and press the Enter key on your keyboard.

3. This will bring you to the Login screen for the website. Type your eWeber portal Username and Password and then click Login.

4. Install the ActiveX Control by clicking on the buttons you see in the following picture.

5. Click Install to begin the installation process of the VPN client software

6. When the installation completes you will see the following screen.

How to use Windows Remote Desktop software to connect to your computer at WSU.

(To be done on your computer at home or another remote location. An internet connection is necessary.)

Now that your VPN connection is established you can now utilize Windows' Remote Desktop software to connect to your computer at WSU.

Important Note: Your WSU computer must be turned on in order to establish a Remote Desktop connection.

1. Click on the Start menu and then on All Programs->Accessories->Remote Desktop Connection.

 

2. In the Remote Desktop Connection window, type your WSU computer's IP Address in the Computer box. Then click Connect.

 

3. You will then see the login screen for your WSU computer.

How to disconnect your Remote Desktop session and your VPN connection. How to locate the VPN client software for future use.

1. To end your Remote Desktop connection click the X at the top of the window.

2. To end your VPN connection right click on the CiscoAnyConnect VPN client icon in the system tray then click Quit.

3. To run the VPN client software in the future you can locate the application by clicking on the Start menu and then clicking All Programs->Cisco->CiscoAnyConnect VPN Client.
