Student Success Center - Assessment and Placement Policy

What is the Assessment and Placement Policy?

The Assessment and Placement Policy is an admissions policy designed to match students’ knowledge and skills with appropriate math and English classes and to ensure these courses are completed in the beginning of their studies.

How does the Assessment and Placement Policy affect me?

Based on whether or not you’ve taken the ACT (or SAT) and subject scores you received, you may be required to take one or more Accuplacer placement tests upon admission to the university. You must take any required Accuplacer placement tests before you can register for any courses at WSU.

If you place into developmental math (Math 0950, 0990, or 1010) and/or developmental English (English 0900 or 0955), you need to:

  1. Begin your required developmental course work within your first two semesters*, and

  2. Make progress (defined as earning a minimum course grade of “C” or better) in your developmental course work each subsequent semester* until you have completed those courses required of your program of study.

*Summer semester registration is not required

What happens if I do not begin and make progress through my required developmental course work as outlined in the Assessment and Placement Policy?

If you do not begin and make progress in your required courses you will receive a registration hold that will prevent you from registering for any classes. To have the hold cleared, you must complete the online Assessment and Placement Policy Information Module.

Students who fail to be in compliance with the Assessment and Placement Policy three times will only be allowed to register for their required developmental course work (i.e., no additional courses) until they have completed their developmental course work with a grade of “C” or better that are required of their program of study. Be aware, there are many implications that result from restricted registration, including delaying your graduation and many financial implications:

I have extenuating circumstances that have prevented me from adhering to the Assessment and Placement Policy. How do I petition for a one semester exception?
