Alternative Spring Break
Alternative Spring break gives students an
opportunity to spend their spring break providing meaningful service. This year
we will be teaming up with Habitat for Humanity building a home for those in
need. Participants are chosen by means of applications which will be available
and accepted November 2nd - January 15th.
“Enhancing the lives of people with intellectual
disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships.”Best
Buddies program that matches college students with individuals from the
community who have developmental disabilities. Volunteers are matched in a
one-to-one friendship and serve as a mentor friend. Volunteers are asked to see
their buddy twice a month and make a phone contact at least once a week for an
academic year. In addition, buddy pairs will participate in chapter activities
such as movie nights, talent shows, and a trip to Lagoon. To get involved in
this program, please pick up an application in Shepherd Union Room 327.
The Boys and Girls Club teams up with the local
Ogden and Roy sites to provide mentoring and volunteer opportunities with
children aged 7-13. This year we will be implementing various activities such
as trips to WSU sporting events, ice-skating, pizza parties, movie nights, WSU
planetarium trips, and more!
Bridging the Gap is a Weber State
University Volunteer Involvement Program focusing on relationships with the
elderly citizens of our Ogden Community. On a monthly basis we visit a senior
center and play the Wii and other games. We will also be hosting a Senior
Health Fair, a Senior Ball, and bowling trips.Our regular visits to various Senior Centers provide a fun and unique
opportunity for Weber State students to get to know the seniors in our area.
CARES works with the YMCA after school program at Gramercy
Elementary. Volunteers are needed every day from 2:30 – 5:30 to help tutor and
mentor students K-6. The CARES program plans activities like decorating
a tree for the Christmas Tree Jubilee, dance workshops, Winter Carnival, and
more to help build one-on-one relationships between students and their Weber
State mentors.
Done In A Day is a great program for busy students because
every service project can be
accomplished in a day such as blood drives, food drives, highway clean-ups, and
the upcoming Fill The Sleigh event in partnership with the Weber State
Bookstore.
Weber State and the Ogden community are “going
green” through efforts from the environmental initiatives program. The
committee is currently working to promote recycling, alternative energy usage,
implementing a community garden, and other exciting community outreach
programs. Last year we also broke a world record by planting 100 trees in under
60 minutes! You can be a part of the important change Weber State needs to meet
our future environmental challenges.
Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty
housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of
conscience and action. Since 1976, Habitat has built more or renovated more
than 100,000 houses worldwide. Students are presently working on homes in Weber
County weekly.
Headstart is
a program partnered with the Ogden Area Community Action Agency that provides
learning activities and a pre-school for children from low income families.
Volunteers interact with children by participating in various activities
throughout the year such as pizza parties, trips to the WSU planetarium, and
mentoring.
The Homeless Projects committee works with Ogden’s
homeless agencies providing services such as donation drives, volunteer hours,
and informational outreach efforts. We hold fun activities such as cardboard
campouts, trick or treat for food, soup kitchens, and homeless panels. Come get
involved in a fun and rewarding way of helping those in need right here in our
Ogden community.
The WSU Special Olympics team provides opportunities
for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities to compete in athletic
events such as basketball, swimming, and soccer. Volunteers are needed in various
capacities such as coaching, mentoring, and playing with the athletes.
Practices are held weekly.
The Community Involvement Center works with Your
Community Connection, which is located at 2261 Adams Avenue in Ogden. Our
students are involved in many activities such as the fundraiser “Real Men Can
Cook,” yard work, and other opportunities. Adult Education classes are offered at the YCC so help in reading, math, and Spanish is greatly appreciated. This is a great opportunity for Education and Social Work majors to get involved.
The Winter Special Olympics Games are planned and
implemented by WSU students. Activities include the opening ceremony, skiing,
snowshoeing, and ice-skating. Volunteers are needed in various capacities such
as planning the games, score keeping, timing, and providing encouragement to
the athletes before, during and after the events.
