Add some prestige to your diploma and resume: Earn Departmental Honors in Communication

Benefits of Departmental Honors

  • Be recognized with the Communication Departmental Honors designation on your official transcript and diploma. 
  • Receive a personalized letter signed by the Weber State University president and the university’s Honors director. 
  • Receive invitations to Honors educational and social events and to the Honors Nye-Cortez banquet at the end of the academic year.

To Earn Departmental Honors, You Must:

  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and a GPA of 3.7 in the major.
  • Complete Comm. 4990 Senior Seminar with a grade of A on both the portfolio and thesis.
  • Present a paper or product in a professional setting such as WSU’s undergraduate research symposium, Utah Communication Association, Western States Communication Association or a regional broadcasting or journalism conference.
  • Attend at least one Honors activity (Issues Forum, Food for Thought, or service or social activity) each year after being accepted into the Honors program. 
  • Complete the application for Departmental Honors and submit it to the Honors Program (third floor of the Stewart Library).
  • Complete the Honors Exit form with Dr. Hailey Gillen Hoke, Communication Departmental Honors Advisor.
  • Submit the Exit Form to Marilyn Diamond, the Honors advisor, to be cleared for graduation with Departmental Honors.

You are Encouraged to:

  • Join a professional association such as Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Broadcast Education Association (BEA), etc.
  • Actively engage in a Communication student organization such as The Signpost, WSU News, KWCR Wildcat Radio, WSU Debate, Lambda Pi Eta (national undergraduate communication honor society for Communication), etc.

To Apply for Departmental Honors:

  • Complete the application for Departmental Honors and submit it to the Honors Program (third floor of the Stewart Library).
  • Visit with Marilyn Diamond, the Honors advisor, to be cleared for graduation with Departmental Honors.
